“I’ll have some training with my pasta, please!”

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Ventura County Veterinary Managers Group (VCVMG) quarterly meeting, which was sponsored by animal health and veterinary pharmaceutical companies, including Dechra, MAI Animal Health, Merck Animal Health, Elanco and Virbac.

Over an Italian lunch at Bistro 13 in Camarillo, California, veterinary managers got to sample a couple of my most popular Practice Smarts veterinary staff training tools for solving complex communications problems with clients and co-workers.

Included was a fun, interactive listening activity done in pairs, as well as a deeper guided experience that gave individuals insights about their own defensive behaviors and how to short-circuit them.

Along the way, there was plenty of audience interaction, a sprinkling of revealing research, and some great laughs – particularly when people recognized things that happen every day in their veterinary practice.

Ever have someone at your clinic avoid telling you how they really feel?

There were also plenty of real-world examples of how veterinary professionals experience fear and defensive reactions to things that happen at work, and how they put the Practice Smarts training tools to work to solve their problems.
